She ended up being in every part of the film. I was completely blown away by the island and the experience of being there, and also Zoe’s work, her knowledge of the place, her generosity in collaborating with me. I just wanted to get a really clear impression of the place and the impact that it can have on you. The first trip was just to experience the island. Even conceptually, the way that I was approaching the film. I was going into it very “open” to what was going to happen. I just had this very basic impression of her and the place.
I didn’t have a big preconception about what it would be like to be there or to work with Zoe. Did any aspects of Zoe or the island surprise you? POV: You had heard about Zoe and Sable Island for so long, I assume that you had some preconceptions. Immediately, it clicked that Zoe and Sable Island would be the perfect subject to explore that sort of concept. The idea of creating a film that focuses on a sacred relationship to the natural world came into my mind and it felt really right. When I completed In the Waves, my last documentary, I reflected on the kind of work that I want to bring into the world and the kind of energy that I want to bring because we are living in some pretty chaotic times. But I always felt really drawn to the place and the work that she does there. JM: I didn’t even realize that I wanted to be a filmmaker until I was in my 20s so it never crossed my mind that I would end up making a documentary about Zoe and Sable Island until my 30s. At what point did you imagine creating a film about Zoe Lucas?

POV: You first heard about “a woman who lives alone on Sable Island” while watching TV as a young child. POV spoke to the director prior to the Canadian premiere at Hot Docs 2022. Her 2017 film In the Waves, about her grandmother confronting the fragility of life, premiered at Visions du Réel and won best medium-length documentary at the RIDM. Mills is an award-winning filmmaker, cinematographer and editor from Cape Breton Island, who is now based in Montreal. Geographies of Solitude had its world premiere at the Berlinale Forum and its Canadian debut at Hot Docs. It invites us to reflect on our own relationship with the natural world. Jacquelyn Mills’ sensuous film honours Lucas’s ongoing commitment to the unique ecosystems on Sable Island via innovative eco-friendly image and sound recording techniques and poignant 16 mm footage. Lucas is dedicated to documenting the ebb and flow of life on this remote island, from seal births to horse deaths, in detail as well as the violation of this pristine place by marine litter.

“We’ve put an important moral choice in the player’s hands, closer to the finale, as we want to encourage the community to argue and discuss the themes we’ve outlined in the story,” Mundfish explains. Mundfish also revealed that: Atomic Heart will have two endings, but reiterated that the game has a “strictly linear” plot and fans shouldn’t expect an RPG-esque openness. “But everything is not as simple as it seems from the outside: the release date will affect communication with publishers, it will affect the schedule of Xbox Game Pass, which Atomic Heart is part of and is also in stores and the global network of major releases (where everything is aligned).” “Usually developers are very careless about the release date, they postpone it and keep saying ‘tomorrow’,” the Moscow-based studio wrote on Discord.

Mundfish later announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, and has now promised fans that the last-gen versions will not be shafted and that Atomic Heart‘s performance on the PlayStation 4 is “good” and “stable”. The game quickly attracted attention, with many comparing it to high-profile franchises such as BioShock.
Revealed in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Atomic Heart is set in alternate history in the Soviet Union. First-person shooter Atomic Heart is in the “polishing and final assembly” phase, but developer Mundfish can’t announce a release date yet.
